Boris Johnson: I owe my life to doctors and nurses

(Patria) – British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was discharged from hospital on Sunday, after spending almost a week in intensive care due to a worsening condition caused by the coronavirus.

In his first public address since being admitted to St. Thomas' Hospital in London, Prime Minister Johnson once again urged Britons to stay in their homes and respect social distancing rules. He also praised medical workers again, calling them the 'heart of the country', and named the doctors and nurses who were with him during his hospital care.

The death toll in Great Britain has exceeded 10,000, with a total of 84,279 infected, and many believe it could become the most affected country in Europe, with the highest death toll. Last week, 938 people died in a single day.

The British government has been under sharp criticism for some time due to alleged poor crisis management, which includes the alleged untimely distribution of protective equipment for medical staff, reports Euronews. This was also confirmed in a joint statement by groups of doctors last week, which stated that the current government is behind the shortage of protective equipment.

- The government has repeatedly promised that there will be enough adequate protective equipment. However, reports are widely coming from the front lines that there is very little protective equipment, and what is available does not provide adequate protection against infection, according to a statement signed by a group from the British Medical Association and other unions.

However, Health Secretary Matt Hancock, at a press conference, tried to justify the deficit of necessary equipment by saying that 'colleagues in other countries have the same problem'.

Hancock also said that the development of the epidemic in the country will depend on the behavior of citizens, thus reminding them of the obligation to stay at home.
