Opening a concert in Turin, at the beginning of the European leg of U2's tour, Bono Vox warned that Europe will no longer exist if a solution to the refugee crisis is not found, reports the Patria News Agency.
Addressing the audience in the packed Pala Alpitour arena in Turin, Bono said:
-We don't know what the solution to the refugee crisis in Africa and Europe is, but we know that if we don't find a solution, Europe, as an excellent idea, will no longer exist. So we have to find a way out, whatever it may be.
As the highlight of the concert, Bono, thinking of the body of the young boy Aylan Kurdi, which the sea washed ashore on the Turkish coast, changed the lyrics of the song 'Pride' and sang:
'One boy washed up on an empty beach'...
The band performed about twenty of their greatest hits, and at the moment when a photo of refugees was displayed on the big screen, Bono said:
'There is so much pain in the world and so much joy in this hall. What do you want? A Europe closed to mercy or a Europe with an open heart?'
Bassist Adam Clayton also criticized the behavior of some European politicians, saying that Europeans are angry at their politicians who do not know how to behave and how to solve the refugee crisis. When asked if a charity concert in the style of Band Aid should be organized, guitarist The Edge said that many would certainly approach the idea seriously, but also that the question is whether such a project is the right answer to the crisis, writes 24sata.hr.
