(Patria) - Former Barcelona footballer Dani Alves has been sentenced to four and a half years in prison for sexual assault in Barcelona on December 30, 2022.
Alves has been in custody since January 20, 2023, and the trial began in early February, according to Sportske novosti.
Alves was convicted because on the night of December 30 to 31, 2022, he sexually assaulted a woman at the Sutton nightclub in Barcelona.
The court heard testimony from the victim, her cousin, friends, nightclub staff, and the defendant himself.
The court in Barcelona found Alves guilty, and although the prosecution sought a maximum sentence of 12 years, he was ultimately sentenced to four and a half.
The defense cited the fact that the Brazilian was drunk as a mitigating factor.
Alves never officially ended his career. His last engagement was with Mexican club UNAM, and he previously played for Barcelona, Sao Paulo, PSG, Juventus, Sevilla, and Bahia.
He left his deepest mark in the Barcelona shirt, for which he played 408 matches, winning 43 trophies, making him one of the most decorated players in football history.
He made 126 appearances for the Brazilian national football team.
