(Patria) - Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, who is in the custody of the International Criminal Court in The Hague, won the mayoral elections in the city of Davao yesterday.
Based on 74 percent of votes counted, Duterte won 619,899, and his main rival Karlo Nograles only 76,349 votes, reported the Philippine portal Philippine Daily Inquirer.
However, it is not clear how Duterte, who is accused of crimes against humanity, can govern a city of almost 1.8 million inhabitants from custody, the portal states.
Duterte (80) was arrested on March 11 at Manila International Airport.
On the same day, he was transferred to The Hague to be tried for charges related to the anti-drug campaign in which thousands of people were killed.
