(Patria) - Former Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan has been acquitted of corruption charges, which he dismissed as politically motivated, after more than four years of trial.
Prosecutors said they will appeal the verdict handed down yesterday by a court in Yerevan.
Sargsyan, who ruled Armenia from 2008 to 2018, was accused of giving preferential treatment in 2013 to his longtime friend, businessman Barsegh Beglaryan, which allegedly cost the state more than one million dollars.
According to the prosecution, Sargsyan ensured that a government tender for the supply of subsidized diesel fuel to farmers was awarded to Beglaryan's company "Flash", rather than another fuel importer who offered a lower price.
The former president maintained throughout that the tender was fair because only "Flash" met the tender conditions set by the Ministry of Agriculture.
