Former German Foreign Minister Heads UN General Assembly

(Patria) - Former German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock was elected yesterday as President of the United Nations General Assembly.

Baerbock was elected to this position at the United Nations headquarters in New York with 167 votes in favor.

Baerbock was the sole candidate for the one-year term, which is primarily ceremonial and should not be confused with the role of UN Secretary-General, currently held by António Guterres.

The election at the plenary session before 193 UN member states was held by secret ballot, reportedly requested by Russia.

Baerbock is scheduled to be inaugurated on September 9, just before the annual meeting of the General Assembly.
