President Donald Trump wants Iran to know that there will be 'hell' if it does not abandon its nuclear program, his press secretary said ahead of talks between US and Iranian delegations.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said that Trump's 'ultimate goal is to ensure that Iran never obtains a nuclear weapon' and that Trump believes in diplomacy, but that 'all options are on the table' if diplomatic efforts fail.
'But he has made it very clear to the Iranians, and so has his national security team, that all options are on the table and Iran has a choice.
You can agree to President Trump's demand, or there will be hell to pay, and that is how the president feels,' Leavitt said.
US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff is expected to speak with the Iranian delegation in Oman today. Iranian state media report that Iran will be represented by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and Omani Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi will act as mediator.
In February, Trump renewed the 'maximum pressure' campaign on Iran, which includes efforts to reduce its oil exports to zero in order to prevent Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. Earlier this week, he said Iran would be in great danger if the talks fail.
