Bosnia and Herzegovina leads the region when it comes to waste management, writes the BiH news agency Patria (NAP). Only Slovenia has more modern landfills than BiH, while Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, Macedonia... are on par with BiH or below it.
Four landfills located in Sarajevo, Zenica, Bijeljina, and Banja Luka operate according to the most demanding world standards, and there are plans to build modern landfills in Livno, Mostar, and Bihać, where waste will be disposed of and recycled as is done in the most developed countries in the world.
In total, according to Tomislav Lukić, head of the cabinet of the Federal Minister for Environment and Tourism, speaking to the BiH news agency Patria, the plan is for BiH to get 15 modern landfills in the coming period, where waste will be disposed of and processed. When it comes to the Sarajevo landfill, energy has long been generated from waste there.
Bosnia and Herzegovina citizens produce nearly 4,000 tons of waste daily, or about one kilogram of waste per capita per day, which aligns with world statistics.
Lukić said that Bosnia and Herzegovina still has problems when it comes to waste management, but it is certain that a big step forward has been made in this segment of BiH society, writes NAP.
