Biden: Palestinian state to be achieved through negotiations, not unilateral recognition

(Patria) - US President Joe Biden believes that a Palestinian state should be achieved through negotiations, not unilateral recognition.

This is a reaction from the White House, after Ireland, Spain and Norway said they would recognize a Palestinian state this month.

As reported by Reuters, the White House stated that Biden is a strong advocate of the two-state solution and has been throughout his career.

"He believes that a Palestinian state should be achieved through direct negotiations between the parties, not through unilateral recognition," the White House said.

Spain, Ireland, and Norway announced yesterday that they would recognize an independent Palestinian state on May 28, to which Israel reacted by recalling its ambassadors from those countries.

Several EU countries have indicated in recent weeks that they plan to recognize Palestinian statehood, arguing that a two-state solution is key to lasting peace in the region.

The UN General Assembly supported the Palestinian bid for full membership in that international organization on May 10.

The vote was a global poll of support for the Palestinian endeavor to become a full UN member, a move that would effectively mean recognition of a Palestinian state, after the US vetoed it in the UN Security Council last month.

The Palestinian pressure for full UN membership came after seven months of war between Israel and Hamas, and at a time when Israel is expanding settlements in the occupied West Bank, which the UN considers illegal.

The United Nations has long supported the vision of two states living side by side within secure and recognized borders.
