Bosnian mathematicians among the best in the world: Won six medals at the International Mathematical Olympiad in Australia

(Patria) - Young mathematicians from Bosnia and Herzegovina have written a new page in the history of our country's educational excellence at the most prestigious world mathematics competition, the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO 2025), held in Australia's Sunshine Coast.

All members of the BiH team were awarded medals – a total of six, including one gold, three silver, and two bronze, marking one of the greatest team successes in the history of our participation in this prestigious knowledge competition.

The team ranked 21st out of 110 countries, with a total of 169 points, representing an absolute record for Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The gold medal and the best individual result for our country were achieved by Vuk Janković, a student of the "Jovan Dučić" Gymnasium from Trebinje, earning 35 out of a possible 42 points, thus becoming the most decorated BiH competitor in IMO history.

Silver medals were won by Andrej Krčmar, a student of Banja Luka Gymnasium, and students Adnan Osmić and Benjamin Mujkanović from the Second Gymnasium Sarajevo.

Bronze medals went to this year's debutants: Harun Memić, a first-year student at the Second Gymnasium Sarajevo, and Stefan Maletić, a second-year student at Banja Luka Gymnasium.

The team was led by Amar Kurić and Tijana Babić, former Olympians, who today dedicate themselves to guiding new generations of mathematical talents.

The achieved success is a result of the exceptional dedication of the students, as well as a system that recognizes and supports excellence. The Government of Sarajevo Canton and the Ministry of Education and Upbringing of Sarajevo Canton continuously invest in education.

In previous years, additional support was provided to students achieving top results in international competitions through financial awards equivalent to annual scholarships.

"We are proud of our students from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Their success is not accidental; it is the result of persistent work, talent, and the support we collectively provide them. We particularly highlight the partnership with the Association of Mathematicians of Sarajevo Canton, which works very professionally with our gifted students, and the teachers who know how to spark interest, impart knowledge, and recognize talent play a significant role.

For years, the Ministry has been strategically investing in promoting knowledge, supporting talented students, and creating conditions for their potential to fully flourish. These young people remind us of the power of education, which is why we will continue to invest in knowledge and excellence," said the relevant minister, Naida Hota-Muminović.

The Ministry of Education and Upbringing of Sarajevo Canton, with the support of the Government of Sarajevo Canton, fully supported our students' participation in the Olympiad.

As emphasized by the Ministry, what makes this success even more significant is the fact that it is an exceptionally young team. Among our competitors are one first-year student, three second-year students, one third-year student, and one graduating student.

At the IMO, despite different ages, all participants solve the same, extremely challenging problems, making the achieved result even more impressive. The Ministry thanks the team leaders, who, as always, provided all necessary support and encouragement in this global arena of knowledge.
