Bosnian mathematicians 36th in the world, and best in the region: They left behind Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, Kosovo, Albania...

(Patria) - In competition with 112 countries, Bosnia and Herzegovina won 36th place at the 64th International Mathematical Olympiad held from July 3 to 13 in Japan. See the full ranking HERE.

Although this is the same result as the previous year, it is important to emphasize that it is the best result in the last 20 years. If we look at the countries in the region, BiH achieved by far the best result. North Macedonia is in 41st place, and Serbia is in 42nd. Croatia is in 52nd place, while Slovenia is in 67th place. Kosovo, Albania, Montenegro, but also Austria, Denmark, Finland, Ireland... are far behind BiH.

The BiH team won one silver, four bronze medals, and one honorable mention. The members of the Olympic team were: Vuk Janković, Andrej Krčmar, Benjamin Mujkić, Ervin Macić, Mirnes Fehrić, and Harun Alibegović. The team leaders were Adisa Bolić and Goran Janković.

Andrej Krčmar, a first-year student at the Public Institution "High School", Banja Luka, won the silver medal. Bronze medals were won by Vuk Janković, a ninth-grade student at the Public Institution Elementary School "Vuk Karadžić" – Trebinje, Benjamin Mujkić, a second-year student at the Public Institution Second Gymnasium Sarajevo, Ervin Macić, a fourth-year student at the Public Institution Second Gymnasium Sarajevo, and Mirnes Fehrić, a fourth-year student at the Public Institution Second Gymnasium Sarajevo. Harun Alibegović, a third-year student at Richmond Park International High School Sarajevo, received an honorable mention.

Otherwise, the first participation in the IMO was in 1993, and we have participated 31 times so far. Although we do not have gold medals, representatives of BiH have won 10 silver, 61 bronze, and 61 honorable mentions.

Among the top ten countries are China, USA, Korea, Romania, Canada, Japan, Vietnam, Turkey. India and Taiwan.
