(Patria) - The City Council of Goražde yesterday made a decision to name a street after Dr. Dušanka Vujasić, a dentist who showed exceptional courage and humanity during the hardest days of the war, sharing the fate of the people of Goražde.
The decision was adopted based on an initiative launched last year by the President of the City Council, Dženis Ćulov. In this way, Dušanka Vujasić will be the first woman after whom a street in Goražde will be named since the signing of the Dayton Peace Agreement.
Vujasić was born in 1956 in Belgrade and moved to Goražde in the early eighties after getting married. She soon got a job at the Health Center as a dentist and quickly gained the trust and respect of her patients.
- When the first shells began to fall on Goražde in May 1992, she decided to stay at the Health Center where she worked and help the citizens. Although she was from Belgrade, having come to work in Goražde a few years earlier, it would certainly have been easier for her to leave. The people of Goražde would have understood.
However, she was guided by the honorable principles of her medical profession and a sense of responsibility towards the people who needed her. Precisely because of this, her decision to stay with this city carries even greater weight and value.
It is also true that Dr. Dušanka Vujasić deserved this recognition much earlier, but it is important that we, as a community, have made the decision that her name will be permanently inscribed on the map of our city - says Ćulov.
During the siege of Goražde, when healthcare facilities operated under extremely difficult conditions, Vujasić, in addition to her primary job as a dentist, helped in treating the wounded and provided support to patients and colleagues in the hospital.
She was killed, along with her colleague dentist Hasan Imamović, on April 27, 1993, when a shell from aggressor positions on the surrounding hills hit the Health Center building.
At the time of her death, she was six months pregnant. Their names, along with those of other colleagues, are also engraved on the memorial plaque at the Goražde Cantonal Hospital.
Ćulov announced that the unveiling of the street sign will be held on the day of her death - April 27.
- We expect her son Boban from Belgrade to come then, who will bring letters his mother sent him during the war years while she lived and worked in Goražde.
By deciding that a street will bear the name of Dr. Dušanka Vujasić, Goražde permanently preserves the memory of a woman who, guided by professional and human responsibility, stayed with this city in the most difficult moments of its history - added Ćulov.
