Begović: Džeko told me a lot about the war in BiH

Part of Bosnia and Herzegovina was always within me. I was a child, but I know that cities in my country were bombed, and people had to hide underground, stated in an extensive interview for the reputable British newspaper “Independent“, Asmir Begović, goalkeeper of the BiH national team and English Premier League club Stoke City.

Begović, as the newspaper states, was expelled from his native Trebinje at the age of four. He first went to Germany, and then to Canada, where, with the persistence of his father Amir, he became one of the most promising young goalkeepers in the world. Although he played for Canada's youth selections, Begović says he always dreamed and believed he would wear the jersey of his homeland.

- Ćiro Blažević called me and asked if I wanted to play for BiH. I said, of course! – Begović told the British newspaper, which also promoted the work of his Asmir Begović Foundation, which helps talented children.

Begović emphasizes that, although he knew a lot about the events in BiH, it was only when he was twenty years old and a member of the BiH national team that he understood the extent of the destruction. He was particularly saddened when he attended the funeral of his grandfather, who was buried in Trebinje.

- Edin Džeko told me a lot. He was in Sarajevo for the entire war, and surely he experiences all of that more intensely – said Begović.
