Ann Linde: The story that life in Sweden is proceeding as usual is not true

(Patria) – Sweden has recorded a drastic increase in the number of new coronavirus infections and deaths over the past month, causing concern in other European countries over the alleged relaxed stance of its government and the implementation of social distancing measures in the country.

Namely, unlike its neighbours Denmark and Norway, Sweden until recently did not close primary and secondary schools, nor most businesses, including hospitality venues.

'Sweden's approach to the epidemic does not differ much from the approach of other countries. It is about the tone,' explains Johan Carlson, director of the Swedish Public Health Agency, adding:

- Instead of saying 'you must stay at home, you are not allowed to do this and that,' we try to explain to the population the background of our recommendations, the reasons why certain things should be done, emphasises Carlson.

Subsequently, Sweden introduced a ban on gatherings of more than 50 people, closed secondary schools and universities, and recommended that citizens over 70 and other vulnerable categories stay at home.

Foreign nationals are not allowed to enter the country, except for citizens of Switzerland and countries of the European Economic Area (EEA) – a measure extended until 15 May.

Swedish Foreign Minister Ann Linde claims that the story that everything is proceeding as usual in Sweden is not true.

- Many are staying at home and not travelling. Many businesses are failing. A dramatic increase in unemployment is predicted, Linde reveals the true side of the emerging situation in Sweden.

Linde emphasises that Sweden has the same goals as other countries – to save lives and protect public health: 'We are working on the same challenges as other countries – the level and speed of the spread of infection, pressure on the healthcare system, and we are using the same tools as other countries.'

In Sweden, more than 12,500 people have been infected with the coronavirus, half in the last 14 days, while 1,300 people have died.
