The final competition within the Google Science Fair 2015 was held at the headquarters of the Google Corporation in Mountain View, California, on September 21, 2015. At this prestigious competition, 20 projects by young scientists from around the world were presented, and among them were two representatives of Bosnia and Herzegovina, reports the BH News Agency Patria.
The finalists representing ten countries by number of projects are: USA (7 projects), Canada (2), Singapore (2), Taiwan (2), Great Britain (2), Bosnia and Herzegovina, France, India, Lithuania, Russia, and Taiwan.
All projects are focused on finding the best answers/solutions to existing global problems. At this unique science fair, one can see futuristic, complex, and even simple projects made with the help of everyday, simple, and familiar items.
These include a method for detecting impurities in gasoline, the production of biodiesel and materials that will store hydrogen from waste chicken feathers, and water purification using corn cobs.
Anela Arifi (18) and Ilda Ismaili (17), students of the International High School in Tuzla, are finalists of the Science Fair 2015 competition. Unfortunately, luck was not on their side this time, and they did not achieve a significant result with their project. These two exceptionally talented students from Tuzla have won numerous awards at international competitions so far.
While their mentor, Aydan Meydan, received the "INSPIRING EDUCATOR AWARD," the award was given in recognition of her exceptional work and assistance in the realization of the project. The award includes $10,000 from Google intended for equipping the school's laboratories and $5,000 worth of scientific equipment and props from Lego Education.
The project description that Google included in the final competition states that it is a dual-reactor system for the production of biodiesel and materials that will store hydrogen from waste chicken feathers.
Google Science Fair is a global online science competition open to individuals and teams aged 13 to 18. The sponsors of this competition are: Google, Lego, Virgin Galactic, National Geographic, and Scientific American.
