American Director Oliver Stone: Charges Against Trump Are Ridiculous

(Patria) - American director Oliver Stone believes that all legal proceedings against Donald Trump are political in nature and that the former US president is a victim of "lawfare", in which criminal prosecution is used to silence political figures.

- Nearly 100 indictments against that guy, it's ridiculous. It's all political. They want to put him behind bars, but they won't be able to - Stone told AFP.

The 77-year-old director of films "JFK", "Platoon", "The Doors" and "Natural Born Killers" said he will not vote for Trump in the US presidential election in November, reports RFE/RL.

Stone stated that "everyone is corrupt", citing Russia, Turkey and the US as examples.

- Corruption is a way of life, but they are now turning it into a political issue - Stone believes.

He added that he will not vote for the current President Joe Biden either.

- Never for Biden, because Biden is a war hawk - says Stone, who is a Vietnam veteran.

Stone spoke to AFP during a trip to Paris where he is promoting his documentary on nuclear energy, "Nuclear Now".

He emphasizes that he has thought a lot about the concept of "lawfare", having recently completed a film about Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who was imprisoned in 2018 on corruption and money laundering charges after several years in power.

The charges against Lula were dropped after an investigation found the judge was biased, and Lula was re-elected president last year.

Stone has often focused on Latin American leftist leaders in his work so far.

He has made three documentaries about the late Cuban leader Fidel Castro and one about his friend, Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez, who died in 2013.

- Lula, Castro and Chavez are all humanists. They are all great. They are all original, doing the best they can for their country. I think Chavez was motivated by love for his country. And Castro too - Stone said.
