Ahmetović: Crane that fell in Mecca weighed several tonnes, dozens dead and injured

World media report that a crane fell in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, with casualties and injuries, reports the Patria news agency.

The crane was placed near the Haram al-Sharif, the holiest site for Muslims that surrounds the Kaaba, and according to AFP, more than 60 people have died. According to Reuters, there are more than 30 injured, citing the Saudi civil defence.

Some media outlets report that among the dead and injured are future pilgrims who have been arriving in Mecca these days to perform the Hajj.

Ishak Ahmetović, who is currently in Saudi Arabia, wrote that the crane in Mecca weighed several tonnes.

- The fall was caused by strong winds, today in the Meccan Haram it killed several lives. Most were people who came this year for the Hajj and at the moment the crane fell were performing their Umrah and walking on Sa'i between Safa and Marwah, where this crane weighing several tonnes also collapsed, which upon falling broke through an entire concrete floor inside the Haram itself - wrote Ahmetović.

All approaches are blocked and there is a large number of emergency teams and firefighters on the ground. It is still not known which nationalities were affected in this accident.

As some of our construction workers working in Mecca on the construction of the Haram confirmed to Patria, none of the BiH citizens were injured.

- Most of our people work as electricians - they told us from Mecca.

BiH pilgrims are also fine, as they are all in Medina, and none of them have yet set off towards Mecca.
