30 years since the death of legendary commander Izet Nanić: Immense courage, honor, and love for the homeland

(Patria) - Exactly 30 years ago today, on August 5, 1995, at the age of 30, Izet Nanić, the legendary commander of the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina and a hero of the liberation war, died.

Izet Nanić was born on October 4, 1965, in Nanića Dolina, Bužim municipality. He graduated from the Military Academy and had his first military engagement in Kragujevac, where he worked as an Air Force and Air Defense lieutenant until the beginning of the aggression against Bosnia and Herzegovina, when he left the JNA and returned home.

His true calling came with the outbreak of the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1992, when he decided to leave the JNA and join the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Izet Nanić took command of the 505th Knightly Brigade, a unit that soon became known for its courage and successes on the front. Under his leadership, the brigade carried out numerous key operations, including the liberation of many towns and strategic points in western Bosnia.

Nanić's brilliant military mind and fearlessness earned him respect not only among his comrades but also among his enemies.

On August 5, 1995, during the liberation operation "Oluja" (Storm), Izet Nanić was killed in action in the wider area of Ćorkovača in an ambush by the Serbian army. On that day, Bosnia lost one of its best sons, but his spirit and legacy remained alive in the hearts of all those who remember his heroic deeds.

The night before his death, Commander Izet Nanić wrote in his war diary:

"Everything is at stake... I hope it succeeds. Me with them, and then the people. Victory is near. It will be ours, God willing, Bosnia and Herzegovina. I feel I can do what I planned, that I have the strength and luck. I've invested everything. The power went out. Good luck".

Izet Nanić received the wartime recognition "Golden Lily" in 1994, and posthumously in 1998, the Order of the Hero of the Liberation War, and was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General.

Izet Nanić was not just a military leader; he was also a symbol of resistance and the fight for freedom. His selflessness and sacrifice were a beacon of hope for many who sought inspiration and strength in the most difficult moments.

Nanić's contribution to the defense of Bosnia and Herzegovina cannot be measured solely by military successes; his presence meant moral support and motivation for all those who fought for survival and freedom.

Today, in Krajina, but also throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina, the name Izet Nanić holds special significance. Izet Nanić left behind an indelible legacy. His courage, honor, and love for his homeland are an example for all future generations.

As we mark the anniversary of his death, we remember not only his military exploits but also his humanity, warmth, and immense love for his people. Izet Nanić was and will remain an eternal inspiration and a symbol of the fight for justice and freedom, writes RTV USK.
