20 years since the massacre in Oborci: Justice has not yet caught up with the perpetrators of monstrous acts

The massacre in Oborci near Donji Vakuf occurred on this day in 1995, when members of the 1st Krajina Corps of the Army of Republika Srpska killed 28 people from Mrkonjić Grad, of whom 24 were Bosniaks and 4 were Croats. These were people previously arrested by Serbian forces, who were then forced to dig trenches in various places: Mrkonjić Grad, Trijebovo, Manjača, Kupres, Bugojno, Donji Vakuf and other locations.

The massacre occurred shortly before the withdrawal of the Army of Republika Srpska from Donji Vakuf, after the people were taken from the railway station in Oborci and shot.

Fleeing the area of the Donji Vakuf municipality, the forces of the Army of Republika Srpska, on 13 September 1995, thus shot a group of civilians in the village of Oborci.

A day later, after units of the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina entered the abandoned village, they found the bodies of 28 executed people, as well as one survivor. In an authentic video recording, he told medical personnel how he survived:

- I went into the basement and then I crawled into a pipe. And that's how I survived. I got up when it started raining, pulled myself out and through the cornfields went up into the forest and waited for the Army of the Republic of BiH to arrive. As soon as the army arrived, I started descending. Tears of joy immediately flowed from my eyes - the surviving man said on that occasion.

In the Prosecutor's Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina, there is a case related to the crime at the Oborci site from September 1995. In that case, an order to conduct an investigation was issued, and the Prosecutor's Office is working on gathering evidence, information and knowledge about these events. When discussing the war crime in the village of Oborci, it is important to emphasize that it involves the murder of about 20 victims of Croatian and Bosniak nationality who were members of a work platoon, and were brought to that area from the Mrkonjić Grad municipality.

The order-givers and perpetrators of this crime are known. According to some residents of this village, the addresses of the order-givers and perpetrators in Bosanska Gradiška, Banja Luka, Bijeljina and Belgrade are also known. However, the fact that the perpetrators of many crimes today move freely through Bosnia is the reason why witnesses of the crimes are reluctant to speak publicly about what they saw.
