(Patria) - The JU Museum "Alija Izetbegović" at the Sarajevo City Hall will screen the documentary film "Legacy and Time" which will be presented as part of the ceremonial program marking the 100th anniversary of the birth of the first president of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Alija Izetbegović.
The program starts at 8 PM.
Legacy and Time – A film about people, decisions, and values of a crucial era
The documentary film "Legacy and Time" offers a serious and measured testimony about the era that shaped modern Bosnia and Herzegovina – about the people who bore responsibility, about the decisions that determined the course of history, and about the values that served as a compass and measure of everything at that time.
At the center of the film's narrative is Alija Izetbegović, the first president of independent Bosnia and Herzegovina, but also an entire generation of those who, during the years of war and international recognition, tried to preserve the dignity of the state and the people. Through carefully selected testimonies of participants in key political processes, the film examines the reasons why Izetbegović's role and his legacy are recognized beyond the borders of this country.
The film does not offer definitive answers but invites reflection and reinterpretation of the legacy that continues to strongly shape our view of the state, leadership, and historical truth today.
The film director is Emir Kapetanović Zumbul, and the narrator and protagonist is Rinko Golubović.
About Alija Izetbegović
Alija Izetbegović was born on August 8, 1925, in Bosanski Šamac. He grew up and was educated in Sarajevo, where he graduated from the Faculty of Law. He worked as a legal advisor in several Sarajevo companies. Due to his political beliefs and activities, he was imprisoned and convicted twice. In the well-known, politically staged "Sarajevo Trial," as the first defendant in a group of thirteen Muslim intellectuals, he was sentenced to 14 years in prison.
He initiated the formation of the Party of Democratic Action and became its first president at the first founding assembly of the SDA on May 25, 1990. After the SDA's victory in the first multi-party parliamentary elections in 1990, Izetbegović was elected the first president of the Presidency of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Alija Izetbegović is the first president of the internationally recognized state of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the president of the Bosnian-Herzegovinian state, and the supreme commander of the Bosnian army during the most difficult period of its history. Izetbegović is the architect of modern Bosnia and Herzegovina.
He passed away on October 19, 2003, from heart failure at the age of 78. His final farewell in Sarajevo was attended by more than 100,000 people, as well as a large number of BiH and international officials.
It is estimated that this was the largest number of people ever to attend a funeral in the BiH capital. He was buried, according to his own wish, at the Šehidsko cemetery Kovači.
The central ceremony marking the 100th anniversary of the birth of the first president of independent Bosnia and Herzegovina, the late Alija Izetbegović, will be held on Friday, August 8, at the Bosnian National Theatre in Zenica, organized by the Government of the Zenica-Doboj Canton, through the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture, and Sport.
