Zohran Mamdani elected as New York's first Muslim mayor

(Patria) - Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani was elected as the 111th mayor of New York, defeating former governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa, and making history as the first Muslim and South Asian mayor of the city.

The 34-year-old democratic socialist from Queens won more than 50 percent of the vote. Cuomo finished second with just over 40 percent, and Sliwa around seven.

Mamdani's campaign, focused on affordable housing, free public transport, and raising the minimum wage, mobilized thousands of progressive voters across New York.

His victory was accompanied by sharp attacks from former President Donald Trump, who called him "radical" and a "communist," and supported Cuomo.

Born in Uganda to Indian parents, Mamdani moved to New York as a child and became a US citizen in 2018. Analysts assess his success as the beginning of a new generation of the American left.
