Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he had a "positive" conversation with U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner and praised, as he put it, their readiness to work on a solution to the war in Ukraine in the coming weeks, Reuters reported last night.
"A very positive conversation," Zelensky said via the Telegram messaging app during a visit to the Moldovan capital Chisinau.
"I am grateful for the readiness to work as actively as possible in the coming weeks to give impetus to diplomacy to end Russia's war against Ukraine," he wrote.
Zelensky was returning to Kyiv from talks in London with the leaders of the United Kingdom, France and Germany on how to move forward with a solution to the war that has lasted more than four years.
The three leaders supported a proposal for a meeting between Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin to try to secure a ceasefire and said Europe would play a role.
Negotiations on the war in Ukraine, mediated by the United States and overseen by Witkoff and Kushner, the son-in-law of U.S. President Donald Trump, have stalled, and Washington is apparently focused on the war with Iran.
In his comments, Zelensky said he understands that much of the world's attention remains focused on Iran, "but our common goal regarding peace in Europe is on the agenda."
He said he and the U.S. envoys discussed the prospects for talks at the upcoming G7 summit in the French resort of Evian and expressed gratitude to the United States for its "positive assessment of Ukraine's position."
