Zelensky in Washington trying to save aid package for Ukraine

(Patria) - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in a speech in Washington, pleaded for continued American military support, warning that failure to help his country defeat the Russian invasion fulfills the Kremlin's "dreams" of destroying democracy in Europe, AFP reported.

Addressing American officers at the National Defense University, he said Ukraine is fighting not only for its existence but also for the defense of the freedoms that emerged across Europe after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

In a rebuke to Republicans in Congress who have turned against American funding of Ukrainian war efforts, Zelensky said politicians should not "betray the soldier" and added that the drying up of American aid is cheering for Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The Ukrainian leader came to Washington after visiting Argentina. He is scheduled to meet today with President Joe Biden and leaders of Congress from both parties, including the Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson.

White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said the visit came at a "critical moment" and that Biden will make it clear that he "stands firm" in his efforts to get Ukraine the aid it needs to resupply its troops and expand efforts to repel Russian forces.

Zelensky also met with leaders of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank as he seeks to support his country's economy. The IMF announced the release of a new tranche of $900 million in its current long-term loan.
