Zelensky dismisses air force chief after F-16 crash and pilot death

(Patria) - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky dismissed the commander of his country's air force yesterday.

The move came a day after Kyiv revealed that a US-made F-16 fighter jet had crashed, killing the pilot.

Zelensky issued a decree removing Mykola Oleshchuk from the post, saying he had made the decision to "strengthen" Ukraine's military leadership.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine confirmed on August 29 that the F-16 fighter jet crashed while repelling a Russian missile and drone attack on Ukrainian territory.

Oleshchuk was appointed commander of the Air Force on August 9, 2021, replacing Serhiy Drozdov.
