Zelensky rejects Russian proposal for three-day ceasefire

(Patria) - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky rejected the Russian proposal for a three-day ceasefire on Saturday, insisting instead on a 30-day cessation of hostilities.

Speaking at a conference with a small group of journalists in Kyiv on Friday, Zelensky dismissed Russian President Vladimir Putin's offer of a ceasefire, which was proposed in honor of the 80th anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany in 1945, calling it a "theatrical performance".

Zelensky said he based his rejection on a US proposal for a 30-day ceasefire, arguing that any meaningful negotiations require a longer timeframe.

He also warned foreign leaders against visiting Moscow on May 9 and participating in the Victory Day celebrations.

"We cannot be responsible for what happens on the territory of the Russian Federation. They provide you with security, and therefore we will not give you any guarantees," he said.

Russian officials have characterized Zelensky's comments as threatening.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova accused him of direct threats to foreign leaders planning to attend the May 9 event.

Former President Dmitry Medvedev also criticized Zelensky, urging him to refrain from "verbal provocations".
