(Patria) - Gaza's Ministry of Health announced on Saturday that the death toll has risen to 69,169, with an additional 170,685 wounded since Hamas's attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, AP reported.
The latest increase in the death toll is attributed to a larger number of bodies found under the rubble since the ceasefire was declared, as well as the identification of previously unidentified bodies.
The announcement comes after Israel returned the bodies of fifteen Palestinians to Gaza on Saturday, a day after militants returned the remains of a hostage to Israel under the terms of a fragile truce in the two-year war.
The exchange marked another step forward for the fragile ceasefire, brokered by the United States.
As part of the agreement, Israel returned the remains of fifteen Palestinians for each Israeli hostage.
Al-Nasser Hospital in the city of Khan Younis announced that fifteen bodies were brought there. The return followed shortly after Israel confirmed on Friday evening that the remains, returned to Israel, belonged to an Israeli who died fighting Hamas in the October 7, 2023 attack that started the war.
The hostage's body belongs to Lior Rudaeff, according to a statement from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office.
