An investigation has been launched against two men over the murder of a priest in a church in Normandy, among them a relative of one of the killers who was shot dead by police after the crime, reports BBC, as carried by the Patria news agency.
Farid K. (30), a relative of attacker Abdel Malik Petitjean, was arrested on suspicion of terrorist association. The other suspect, Jean-Philippe Steven (20), is under investigation because he had previously attempted to travel to Syria together with Petitjean.
Petitjean and co-perpetrator Adel Kermiche, both 19-year-olds, were shot dead after the murder of a Catholic priest that shocked France. The youths last Tuesday stormed the church of Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray and slit the throat of the 85-year-old priest, for which the Islamic State (ISIL) organisation claimed responsibility.
The Paris prosecutor, reports BBC, said that both men arrested on Sunday have been remanded in custody.
Five days after the murder, numerous Muslims on Sunday expressed their opposition to ISIL by attending church services. Thus, more than a hundred of them were in the cathedral in Rouen, together with about 2,000 Catholic faithful who came to the memorial service for Father Hamel.
