Germany Closes Embassy in Ankara Due to Fear of Attacks by Erdogan's Supporters

The German Ministry of Foreign Affairs yesterday confirmed the closure of the embassy in Ankara and all other consular offices in Turkey, including the two largest consulates in Istanbul, reports the Patria News Agency.

Bild writes that the reason for this measure is information about the possibility of an attack during the religious holiday of Eid al-Adha. The anger of a part of the Turkish public was caused by the negative portrayal of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the German weekly Der Spiegel.

The Turkish government accused the German magazine of distorting the situation in the country in a special issue dedicated to Turkey. They are particularly outraged by the cover, which they called "extremely provocative".

A spokesperson for the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the cover was designed to create "a negative image not only of Turkey but also of Islam," writes Index.
