Žbanić wrote the script for a film about Srebrenica, filming in autumn 2016.

Jasmila Žbanić, a Bosnian director, plans to film a movie about the genocide in Srebrenica in 1995, when more than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys were killed, reports the Bosnian news agency Patria.

Žbanić has already written the script for the film, and secured financial resources through the Creative Europe program. The filming of the movie is expected to cost 4.5 million euros.

- It is a very difficult topic - said Žbanić, explaining that the film will be based on the true story of translator Hasan Nuhanović, who witnessed the attack by Bosnian Serbs in July 1995 on the UN protected zone of Srebrenica.

Nuhanović's family also perished in the Srebrenica genocide because they were not allowed to stay in the UN base.

- We are talking about a moment in history that could have been different for the 8,000 killed if someone had just had the courage and made a different decision - says Žbanić.

She also said that this is the largest budget for any of her films, but that she needs a lot to portray her story as credibly as possible. Srebrenica will be her first war film, and she will also need a production partner as well as a distributor.

- For me, this is a very emotional story about Europe and my country. There is a lot of human ambiguity in what we know about Srebrenica. When you start researching, you see how many dimensions there were in Srebrenica - says Žbanić.

It will be a personal story about a translator who had to tell his family to leave the UN base.

- We all have some experience when we were forced to do things we later regret. Why didn't we do something to make it different - says Žbanić.
