(Patria) - Polls have closed in Turkey, where in the second round of elections, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and challenger Kemal Kilicdaroglu are facing each other.
Erdogan voted at a polling station in Istanbul, and his opponent in the capital Ankara.
- This (second round) is the first in Turkish democratic history. Turkey, with almost 90% turnout in the last round, has beautifully shown its democratic struggle, and I believe it will do the same today. I pray that this will be good for our country and our people - Erdogan said at the polling station.
His challenger Kemal Kilicdaroglu also gave a statement to the media:
"In order to get rid of oppression and this authoritarian leadership, in order to bring real democracy and freedom, I call on all citizens to go to the polls. During the race, indecent propaganda and slander were used, but I believe in the common sense of the people.".
Around 7 PM our time, we could get the first results and turnout data, but final results are expected around 10-11 PM.
