(Patria) – Iran is ready for a full prisoner swap with the US, Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif said in a virtual address to the Council on Foreign Relations in New York.
Washington has long demanded that Iran release American citizens, including father and son Baquer and Siamak Namazi, who are of Iranian-American origin.
Navy veteran Michael White, who had been held by Iran since 2018, returned home in June under an agreement in which the US allowed Iranian-American doctor Majid Taheri to visit Iran. White claims he contracted the coronavirus in prison.
Earlier, in December 2018, Washington and Tehran agreed on a prisoner swap in which Iran released American citizen Xiyue Wang, who spent three years in an Iranian prison on espionage charges, while the US released Iranian Massoud Soleimani, who was accused of violating US sanctions against Iran.
Reuters reports that official Tehran denies arresting people on political grounds and has accused most foreign prisoners of espionage.
