West African delegation arrived in Niger, will try to find a solution to the crisis

(Patria) - A delegation from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) arrived yesterday in Niger's capital Niamey to try to find a solution to the crisis, eight days after the coup in which democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum was overthrown.

The ECOWAS delegation, led by former Nigerian President Abdulsalami Abubakar, is scheduled to meet with the putschists in Niger to convey the demands of the leaders of the pan-African organization, according to a statement from the Presidency.

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, the current chairman of ECOWAS, has called for all efforts to be made to find a peaceful solution to the crisis in Niger, following sanctions imposed by ECOWAS on the country and an ultimatum issued to the putschists to restore constitutional order, reports Agence France Presse (AFP).

ECOWAS has imposed severe sanctions on Niamey and given the putschists until Sunday to reinstate the elected president Mohamed Bazoum, overthrown on July 26, threatening to resort to force otherwise, reports RSE.

The organization has suspended financial transactions with Niger and stated that it is preparing for a military operation, while emphasizing that it is "the last option on the table".
