(Patria) - The life of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who survived an assassination attempt yesterday, is out of danger, said Slovak Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Environment Tomas Taraba, as reported by agencies citing Slovak media.
Taraba told the BBC last night that the surgery was successful and that the prime minister is no longer in critical condition.
Fico was wounded in a shooting that occurred after a government meeting in the town of Handlova in western Slovakia. He was hospitalized in serious condition with wounds to his limbs, chest, and abdomen.
The assailant has been taken into custody. According to Slovak media reports, he is a 71-year-old writer, Juraj Cintula, who carried out the assassination attempt on Fico due to disagreement with his government's policies.
