Appeals Chamber of the Tribunal to Deliver Final Verdict Against Župljanin and Stanišić

The Tribunal confirmed today that the Appeals Chamber in the case of Mićo Stanišić and Stojan Župljanin, two former high-ranking Bosnian Serb officials, will deliver its verdict on Thursday, 30 June 2016, at 3:30 PM.

Mićo Stanišić surrendered to the Tribunal on 11 March 2005. Stojan Župljanin was arrested by Serbian authorities and brought to the Tribunal's detention unit on 21 June 2008. The Trial Chamber approved the prosecution's motion to join these two cases in September 2008. The trial began on 14 September 2009 and concluded on 1 June 2012. The proceedings lasted 354 days, with evidence from 199 witnesses and 4,400 documents in the evidentiary material.

The appeals hearing was held on 16 December 2015.

Mićo Stanišić, former Minister of Internal Affairs of Republika Srpska, and Stojan Župljanin, former chief of the Banja Luka regional police, were charged as participants in a joint criminal enterprise aimed at the permanent removal of Bosniaks, Bosnian Croats, and other non-Serbs from the territory of the planned Serbian state in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Trial Chamber concluded that Stanišić and Župljanin participated in this criminal enterprise and that many of the heinous crimes were committed in numerous municipalities in BiH. The Trial Chamber sentenced both Stanišić and Župljanin to 22 years in prison for crimes against humanity and war crimes committed between April and December 1992 in BiH.
