Wilders announced he will not be Prime Minister of the Netherlands

(Patria) - Anti-Islam right-wing Dutch leader Geert Wilders, whose party won the parliamentary elections, announced yesterday that he will not be Prime Minister because he lacks the support of political parties with whom he is trying to form a ruling coalition.

"I can only become Prime Minister if ALL parties in the coalition support me, which is not the case," Wilders announced on social network X, almost four months after the parliamentary elections in the Netherlands.

Dutch media reported two days ago about a breakthrough that could lead to the formation of a technocratic government.

"Political parties are ready to move to the next phase in forming the government after two days of good and intensive negotiations," said the negotiation supervisor, who is expected to submit a key report today.

Wilders surprised the Netherlands and the rest of Europe when he achieved a major victory in the parliamentary elections held in November.

The leader of the Party for Freedom (PVV) first tried to form a ruling majority with the liberal VVD party, the agrarian BBB party, and the centrist New Social Contract (NSC) party. But negotiations hit a dead end last month.

"I wanted a right-wing cabinet, less asylum and immigration. Dutch people first. The love for my country and voters is great and more important than my own position," Wilders wrote yesterday, although he had previously regularly stated that he wanted to lead the country.

His victory shook Dutch politics, but to fulfill his promise to be "the prime minister of all" he had to convince other parties to join his coalition.

His goal was to secure a majority of 76 seats out of the 150 seats in the Dutch parliament.

During the campaign, Wilders exploited widespread frustration with migration, promising to "close the borders" and ban the Quran, but he "postponed" the latter promise.
