WHO: Monkeypox is not a new Covid and can be stopped

(Patria) - Monkeypox (mpox) is not a new Covid because authorities clearly know how to control its spread, says a leading World Health Organization (WHO) expert, writes the BBC.

Despite real concern over a new variant of the virus and a global alert, WHO Europe regional director Hans Kluge told reporters that tackling monkeypox is possible and necessary through joint efforts.

Decisive action now, including ensuring vaccines reach areas where they are most needed, could stop a new cycle of panic and neglect.

A case of infection with the new Clade Ib variant was confirmed last week in Sweden, linked to the spread of the disease in Africa.

Monkeypox has caused at least 450 deaths in the Democratic Republic of Congo, linked to the Clade Ib variant.

Experts say much is still unknown about the new variant, but it may spread more easily, causing more severe illness.

No cases of infection with the Clade Ib variant have been recorded in the United Kingdom, but experts warn that the disease could spread if international action is not taken.

Another variant, Clade II, was responsible for the 2022 spread of the disease that initially affected Europe and continues to appear in many parts of the world.

- Experts know how to control mpox regardless of its variant: through non-discriminatory public health action and equitable access to vaccines - Kluge emphasized.

The virus, which causes fever and rash, spreads through contact with skin lesions, including sexual contact. Kluge states that the risk to the general population is low.
