WFP Warns: Escalation in the Middle East Could Lead Global Hunger to Record Levels

(Patria) - The World Food Programme (WFP) warned today that an escalation of conflict in the Middle East could lead global hunger to record levels, while millions of people worldwide are at risk of further deterioration of food security.

A new WFP analysis estimates that almost 45 million people could fall into acute food insecurity if the conflict continues, joining the already existing 318 million affected by food insecurity worldwide.

- This would bring global hunger levels to record highs, and it is a terrible prospect - WFP Deputy Executive Director Carl Skau told reporters in Geneva.

He warned that disruptions in energy and fertilizer markets are already causing food prices to rise, especially in import-dependent regions.

- A sharp increase in global food and fuel prices could leave millions of families without stable access to food - Skau stated.

According to the WFP, sub-Saharan African and Asian countries face the greatest risk due to import dependency, with a projected increase in hunger in both regions.

- If this conflict continues, it will have consequences worldwide - Skau said, warning that vulnerable families will be the hardest hit.
