(Patria) - The US Supreme Court ruled yesterday that the federal state of Texas can immediately begin implementing a controversial law on migrants.
This law, in fact, allows state authorities to arrest and detain people suspected of illegally entering the country.
The decision was made by a majority of votes, as three liberal judges were against, CNN reports.
Legal challenges to the law are still pending before the federal Court of Appeals, but yesterday's Supreme Court decision brings a significant, albeit temporary, victory to Texas, which is in constant conflict with the Joe Biden administration over immigration policy.
The Court of Appeals on Monday blocked the Texas law from taking effect indefinitely, but the Supreme Court overturned that yesterday.
The law, signed in December by Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott, immediately raised concerns among immigration advocates due to increased racial profiling, as well as provisions that allow Texas authorities to detain and deport migrants.
