E-scooter riders targeted by police, still using pedestrian zones instead of roads

(Patria) - Sarajevo police have continued to fine e-scooter riders who use sidewalks and pedestrian zones. Riders are issued violation orders of 50 KM, although a fine of up to 250 KM can be imposed.

"The movement of bicycles, mopeds, and electric balancing vehicles on surfaces intended for pedestrian movement is prohibited," states the amended Law on Traffic Regulation in the Sarajevo Canton.

E-scooters are allowed to move on bicycle paths and bicycle lanes, as well as in the roadway.

If there is no bicycle path, e-scooter riders are allowed to use the road, up to a maximum width of one meter from the right edge of the roadway. Although we often see e-scooter riders using the road, which complicates traffic flow because car drivers do not want to drive behind e-scooter riders.

Another problem is riding on bicycle paths where they very often "collide" with cyclists and even pedestrians. For example, the bicycle lane from Nedžarići towards Dobrinja, which is one-way, is used for riding in both directions. Given that it is also part of the pedestrian path, close encounters between pedestrians, cyclists, and e-scooters are frequent because there is no space for them to pass each other.
