(Patria) - European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that any "credible" peace plan must "stop the killing" while "not sowing the seeds of future conflict," according to a European Union statement.
The statement highlighted three key elements that the Commission considers necessary, which are in direct opposition to parts of a controversial American peace proposal.
The Commission emphasizes that the following conditions must be met to achieve lasting peace:
Borders are inviolable: Ukraine's borders cannot be changed by force.
Military strength: No restrictions should be imposed on Ukraine's armed forces that would make the country "vulnerable to future attack".
EU role: The European Union's "central role" in ensuring peace must be fully reflected, with the ultimate goal of Ukraine eventually joining our Union.
Von der Leyen also made a strong appeal for the "return of every Ukrainian child abducted by Russia".
She stated that "tens of thousands of boys and girls remain captive" in that country, emphasizing that this issue must also be resolved in the context of any peace agreement.
The statement by the President of the European Commission clearly sets European red lines, emphasizing that the principle of sovereignty and territorial integrity is above political pressure for a quick ceasefire at the cost of concessions.
