Von der Leyen: EU ready to defend itself against US tariffs with countermeasures

(Patria) - The European Union is ready to defend its interests with proportional countermeasures against the tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump, stated the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen yesterday.

After a phone call with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Von der Leyen announced that the EU will cooperate with its partners to achieve this goal, Reuters reports.

She noted that the 27 EU member states are committed to close cooperation with Great Britain in the field of security and defense, and expressed concern about Russia hindering peace efforts in Ukraine.

She added that she will meet with British Prime Minister Starmer in London on April 24th on the occasion of the International Summit on the Future of Energy Security.

Basic tariffs of 10 percent on all imports into the United States came into effect on Saturday.

The European Union has announced that the bloc's member states are expected to vote on Wednesday on countermeasures to US tariffs on steel and aluminum.
