Von der Leyen: Gas prices in Europe lower than at the start of Russia's attack on Ukraine

(Patria) - Gas prices are now lower in the EU than they were before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during her stay in Sweden.

"We must continue to increase pressure on Russia, and we will continue to do so, of course, with our unwavering support for Ukraine," she said at a press conference.

On the occasion of Sweden's six-month presidency of the European Union, Von der Leyen said that Russia had reduced gas supplies to the EU by 80 percent in the eight months since the start of the conflict in Ukraine, but that the EU had compensated for this by diversifying suppliers.

"Undoubtedly, before the war, we were too dependent on Russian fossil fuels. And Russia exploited that dependence and began to wage an energy war. Russia tried to blackmail us, but it failed thanks to our unity. Hard work paid off. Gas prices are now lower than before the Russian invasion," said Von der Leyen.
