(Patria) - Comments by a high-ranking Ukrainian defense official suggest that the Ukrainian army could soon begin an operation to liberate Crimea.
When asked by journalists about the possible entry of Ukrainian forces into Crimea, the head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, Kyrylo Budanov, said that this would happen soon.
He did not specify a date, but said it would happen in the near future, reports SkyNews.
Crimea has been under Russian occupation since 2014 and is a key target of the Ukrainian counteroffensive, N1 reports.
In recent weeks, repeated attacks on the peninsula have been recorded – including an explosion that damaged the Kerch Bridge connecting Crimea to Russia.
The Ukrainian counteroffensive was launched in early June, but has so far been relatively slow – although the momentum of the Ukrainian advance appears to have increased in recent days.
