(Patria) - In light of the Ukrainian-Russian conflict and rising tensions, countries are increasingly investing in military defense.
China recently showcased its latest military arsenal, but a response quickly followed from the US, reports HRT.
China unveiled new sixth-generation aircraft, while fifth-generation jets remain rare worldwide.
Tailless stealth fighters dominate the airspace and are capable of anti-ship attacks. Their role will be crucial for strengthening China's aircraft carrier fleet.
Additionally, China recently introduced its first new-generation amphibious assault ship, further enhancing its military capabilities.
- This will significantly increase the speed of landing and the intensity of attacks on the enemy coast - explains Chinese military expert Du Wenlong.
The strengthening of China's military capabilities is part of a strategy to increase its presence in the South China Sea, prepare for a potential conflict over Taiwan, and achieve regional dominance.
Rivalry with the US further drives Chinese investment in military power. The US remains the global leader in military spending, with a record budget of $895 billion for 2025.
- The United States is using the 'Chinese military threat' as an excuse to maintain hegemony - stated Zhang Xiaogang, spokesperson for China's Ministry of National Defense.
Within NATO, Poland leads with defense spending exceeding 4% of GDP, while other countries such as the Baltic states, Finland, and Sweden are investing heavily due to the potential Russian threat.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte emphasizes that the 2% of GDP target for defense is insufficient for long-term security.
- Our deterrence capabilities are now adequate, but we must ensure they remain so in four or five years - says Rutte.
Russia continues to invest significant resources in military power but faces economic challenges and sanctions that hinder the long-term sustainability of these investments.
- We spend 6.3% of GDP on defense, but we cannot increase military spending indefinitely - admitted Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Global military spending is expected to exceed $2.5 trillion in 2025, with key investments coming from NATO, Eastern Europe, Asian countries, and the Middle East.
