Top US and UAE diplomats discussed ending the war in Sudan

(Patria) - The US State Department announced yesterday that top American and Emirati diplomats discussed the need to end the war in Sudan, Al Arabiya reported.

- The Secretary and Minister of Foreign Affairs continued discussions on our joint efforts to achieve a humanitarian ceasefire in Sudan - said the Principal Deputy Spokesperson for the State Department, Tommy Pigott, after a phone call between Secretary of State Marc Rubio and UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed.

- The Secretary and Sheikh Abdullah affirmed the strategic relationship between the United States and the UAE - added Pigott.

According to a statement from the UAE, the duo discussed the "tragic developments in the civil war in Sudan and affirmed the importance of achieving an immediate and unconditional ceasefire and ensuring the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians".

Sheikh Abdullah welcomed President Donald Trump's recent statement calling for an end to the war, as well as the US President's efforts to achieve stability in Sudan.

Trump said on Wednesday that he had begun working to end the war in Sudan, revealing that efforts were initiated at the personal request of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman during their meeting at the White House.

The Sudanese army, which is in a civil war with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), has repeatedly accused the UAE of supporting its rivals with weapons and mercenaries. The UAE denies this.

Rubio said last week that the United States knows which countries are supplying weapons to the RSF and will express concern without naming any country.
