Vladimir Putin ordered the withdrawal of the Russian army from Syria

DAMASCUS, (Patria) - Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the withdrawal of Russian troops from Syria during a surprise visit to the Hmeimim base, reported the Russian agency Sputnik.

This is Putin's first visit since the base was established in Latakia, and his order is unexpected, although it was announced back in 2016 that the troops in Hmeimim had "done their job" and should withdraw soon.

Putin was welcomed at the military airport by Syrian President Bashar Al Assad, accompanied by Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu. Putin told the soldiers that "Russia is returning from Syria victorious".

- I order the Minister of Defense, the Chief of the General Staff, to begin the withdrawal of the Russian group to their permanent deployment bases - Putin said, addressing the army.

The Russian President emphasized that the Russian armed forces, together with the Syrian army, defeated the most effective group of international terrorists in Syria.

- In two years, the Russian Armed Forces, together with the Syrian army, have defeated the most effective group of international terrorists. In this regard, a decision has been made: a significant part of the Russian military contingent in Syria is returning home, to Russia - stated the Supreme Commander of the Russian army.

In March 2016, Putin made a decision to withdraw the larger part of the Russian aviation group in connection with the successful completion of tasks. However, Russia has not abandoned its obligation to supply weapons and military equipment to the Syrian government and train military specialists.

The Hmeimim airbase and the naval logistics center in Tartus are still operational. In addition, the Russian Reconciliation Center is also operating in Syria.
