North Korea's ruling party re-elects Kim Jong-un as party chairman

(Patria) - North Korea's ruling Workers' Party has re-elected leader Kim Jong-un as its general secretary on the fourth day of its party congress meetings on Sunday, the state news agency KCNA reported on Monday, Reuters reported.

In a laudatory report, Kim is credited with raising the country's prestige, creating an international environment favorable to its revolutionary struggle, and strengthening the country's military "into an elite and powerful army".

Under his leadership, "the country's war deterrence with nuclear forces as its backbone has been radically improved," KCNA said.

The meeting also elected members of the party's Central Committee and adopted revisions to the party rules, KCNA said. No details were given about the changes.

The ninth party congress, usually held every five years for several days, opened on Thursday and is being closely watched by South Korea for any indications of new domestic and foreign policy directions.
