
In the last ten years, there have been about a hundred plane crashes worldwide in which thousands of people died. The Croatian Information News Agency published a review of those with the deadliest outcomes.
2015.
March 24 - Lufthansa subsidiary Germanwings' Airbus A320 crashed in the French Alps near Digne on a flight from Barcelona to Duesseldorf, and it was confirmed that all 150 people on board died.
2014.
December 28 - AirAsia flight QZ8501 from Surabaya, Indonesia to Singapore disappeared over the Java Sea with 162 passengers and crew.
July 24 - Air Algerie flight from Ouagadougou to Algiers disappeared over Mali near the border with Burkina Faso. The McDonnell Douglas MD-83 was owned by Spain's Swiftair, and all 116 passengers died.
July 23 - In the crash of Taiwan's ATR-72 on a short TransAsia Airways flight GE222 to Penghu Island, 48 out of 54 people on board died.
July 17 - Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 crashed near the village of Grabove in eastern Ukraine, killing all 298 people on board. The prevailing view is that the plane was shot down by a surface-to-air missile by pro-Russian rebels, although they deny responsibility for the event.
March 8 - Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 between Kuala Lumpur and Beijing disappeared. Despite the largest and most expensive search operation in history, no trace of the missing plane has been found to date.
February 11 - A military transport plane, a Hercules C-130, crashed in a mountainous area of northwestern Algeria, and one person survived out of 78 people on board.
2013.
November 17 - All 50 passengers and crew died in the crash of Tatarstan Airlines' Boeing 737 in Kazan, Russia.
October 16 - An ATR 72-600 of the Laotian carrier Lao Airlines crashed into the Mekong River. All 49 people on board died.
2012.
June 3 - A passenger plane of the Nigerian company Dana Air crashed with 150 passengers and crew in a densely populated area of Nigeria's largest city, Lagos.
April 20 - In the crash of Bhoja Air's Boeing 737 while landing at the airport in Islamabad, Pakistan, all 121 passengers and six crew members died.
2011.
September 7 - A passenger plane carrying members of the Russian hockey club Lokomotiv crashed shortly after taking off from Yaroslavl, Russia. 45 people died in the crash, including the entire hockey team.
July 26 - A Moroccan military Hercules C-130 aircraft crashed in a mountainous area near Guelmim, killing 78 people.
July 8 - Hewa Bora Airways crashed in the Democratic Republic of Congo. 74 out of 118 people on board lost their lives.
January 9 - Iran Air's Boeing 727 disintegrated upon crashing near the Iranian city of Urmia, killing 77 out of 100 people on board.
2010.
November 5 - All 68 passengers and crew died in the crash of Aerocaribbean passenger plane in Cuba.
July 28 - Pakistan's Airblue crashed while landing at the airport in Islamabad on a domestic flight from Karachi, killing all 152 people on board.
May 22 - Air India's Boeing 737 overshot the runway at Mangalore airport in southern India, where it was supposed to land, and crashed into a nearby valley. None of the 158 people on board survived.
May 12 - Over a hundred people died in the failed landing of Afriqiyah Airways' Airbus 330 in the Libyan city of Tripoli.
April 10 - Polish President Lech Kaczynski and more than 90 other people died when a Tupolev 154 aircraft crashed near the airport of Smolensk, Russia.
January 25 - Ethiopian Airlines passenger plane with 89 passengers and crew crashed into the sea shortly after taking off from Beirut.
2009.
July 15 - A Tupolev owned by Caspian Airlines crashed in northern Iran on a flight to Armenia. All 168 passengers and crew died.
July 30 - Yemen's Airbus 310 passenger plane crashed near the Comoros Islands in the Indian Ocean. Only one person survived out of 153 on board.
June 1 - All 228 passengers and crew are presumed dead in the crash of Air France's Airbus 330 into the ocean on a flight from Rio de Janeiro to Paris, although rescue teams managed to recover the bodies of only 50 of them.
May 20 - An Indonesian army Hercules C-130 transport plane crashed in a village in eastern Java, killing at least 87 people.
February 12 - A passenger plane crashed into a house in Buffalo, New York, killing 50 people - 49 on board and one on the ground.
2008.
September 14 - Aeroflot's Boeing 737 crashed while attempting to land in the Russian city of Perm. None of the 88 passengers and crew survived.
August 24 - 68 people died in the crash of a passenger plane shortly after taking off from Bishkek airport, the capital of Kyrgyzstan.
August 20 - Spanair's plane skidded off the runway while taking off from Madrid's Barajas airport. 154 people died and 18 were injured.
2007.
November 30 - 56 people died in the crash of a Turkish company Atlasjet plane. The plane was preparing to land at Isparta airport in southwestern Turkey when it suddenly disappeared from radar and crashed into a hilly area.
September 16 - At least 87 people died in the crash of a One-Two Go plane in the Thai tourist resort of Phuket.
July 17 - In one of the worst plane crashes in Brazil, 199 people died. TAM's Airbus A320 failed to stop on the runway while landing, overshot the road, and hit a building and a gas station. Both the building and the plane caught fire.
May 5 - A Kenyan Boeing 737 crashed in Cameroon shortly after takeoff. All 114 people on board died.
January 1 - A Boeing 737-400 with 102 passengers and crew crashed on the island of Sulawesi on a domestic Indonesian flight, and all people on board died.
2006.
September 29 - A Boeing 737 with 154 people on board collided with a private plane and crashed in the Brazilian Amazon. No one survived.
August 27 - Comair passenger plane crashed shortly after takeoff in Lexington, Kentucky. Only one out of 50 passengers and crew survived.
August 22 - All 170 people on board died in the crash of a Russian Tupolev 154 passenger plane in Ukraine. The Pulkovo Airlines plane was en route from the southern Russian city of Anapa to St. Petersburg.
July 9 - Sibir Airlines' Russian Airbus A-310 with 195 passengers and eight crew members crashed while landing in Irkutsk, Siberia. 122 people died.
May 3 - Armavia's Armenian Airbus A-320, with 113 people on board, crashed into the sea in bad weather while attempting to land near the Russian resort town of Sochi. There were no survivors.
2005
December 10 - Sosoliso Airlines' DC-9 from Nigeria crashed while landing in Port Harcourt. 106 passengers died and four survived.
December 6 - A C-130 military transport plane crashed in a suburb of Tehran. 110 people died, including some on the ground.
October 22 - Bellview Airlines' Boeing 737-200 from Nigeria with 117 people on board crashed shortly after takeoff near Lagos. None of the passengers and crew survived.
September 5 - A Boeing 737-200 crashed in northern Sumatra shortly after takeoff. 102 passengers and 47 people on the ground were killed by parts of the plane. 15 passengers in the tail of the plane survived.
August 16 - West Caribbean Airways plane on a flight from Panama to Martinique crashed in an uninhabited part of Venezuela. All 160 people on board died.
August 14 - Helios Airways plane from Cyprus to Athens crashed with 121 passengers and crew after a cabin pressure failure. No one survived.
July 16 - Equatair plane crashed shortly after taking off from Malabo, the capital of Equatorial Guinea. All 60 passengers and crew died.
February 3 - Afghan Kam Air's Boeing 737 crashed in the mountains during a snowstorm. All 104 passengers and crew lost their lives.
