UN Security Council rejects US draft resolution condemning Hamas

The United Nations Security Council has rejected the US draft resolution calling for the condemnation of Hamas, which Washington holds responsible for the violence in Gaza, Al Jazeera reported, citing the Anadolu Agency.

The draft resolution was not adopted after failing to receive support from at least nine members of the UN Security Council.

For any resolution to be adopted, it requires the support of at least nine out of the total 15 Security Council member states, and none of the permanent members can exercise a veto.

US Veto on Protection of Palestinians

After the US vetoed a UN draft resolution calling for the protection of Palestinians earlier on Friday, a vote was held on the draft resolution calling for the condemnation of the Palestinian movement Hamas.

Only the US supported the draft, while Russia, Kuwait, and Bolivia voted against it, and 11 countries abstained.

The draft resolution proposed by the US called for the strongest condemnation of rocket attacks from Gaza into Israel, which it stated were damaging civilian infrastructure.

On Friday, the US prevented the adoption of a draft resolution proposed by Kuwait, which had been the subject of intense debates for nearly two weeks.

Ten countries supported the draft resolution, while the United Kingdom, Poland, the Netherlands, and Ethiopia abstained.

The initial draft called for international protection for the Palestinian people, while its final version appealed for the "consideration of measures to establish international protection" for Palestinian civilians.
