UN Security Council adopts draft resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza

(Patria) - The UN Security Council has adopted a draft resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, avoiding a veto by any of the major powers.

According to Al Jazeera, fourteen countries supported the draft resolution, while the US abstained.

The resolution was proposed by 10 elected members of the body.

The vote comes after permanent members Russia and China vetoed a US draft resolution on Friday because it did not call for an unconditional, immediate ceasefire.

According to diplomats speaking to the AFP news agency, the new text was worked on together with the United States to avoid a veto.

Several resolutions from Gaza have been vetoed in the council in recent months due to disagreements between the five permanent members.

The resolution was proposed by Algeria, Guyana, Ecuador, Japan, Malta, Mozambique, Sierra Leone, Slovenia, South Korea, and Switzerland.
